I was asked by The Hackney Society to make a film based on their books 'Women from Hackney's History'. We chose 11 women from the books and turned them into acted portraits set at a moment in their lives. I co-wrote the scripts with Nina Sprigge and we sourced all the actors from Stoke Newington's Tower Theatre. Without a real budget we were able to use Hackney locations such as the National Trust's Sutton House and also Hoxton Hall, and other locations, entirely gratis. I co-wrote, filmed, directed and edited the film. Nina Sprigge co-wrote and was performance director. Historical consultant was Sue Doe, and Janet Chapman commissioned it. It premiered at the Rio Cinema, Dalston for International Womens Day in March 2026 and screened again as part of the Hackney History Festival in May 2026.
Those featured include women who made their mark on history, and women whose lives were barely recorded. They include: suffragist, Florence Fenwick Miller; lawyer, Cornelia Sorabji; writer, Beatrice Hastings and magician and mesmerist, Georgiana Eagle.
