The Glory of the Garden (1 hour documentary. 2019)
Hidden in the English countryside there’s a secret garden like no other. It's one man’s work of over forty years and never before seen by the public...until now. The Hereford Alternative Arts Centre is the singular creation of British visionary artist and plumber Paul 'Rick' Jones. A work-in-progress since 1974, Rick’s unruly garden has been described as a 'labyrinthine junkyard wonderland', boasting delights such as a kettle tree, canoe hotel and a geodesic dome made of bed frames. I filmed this over the course of two months one spring and I followed Rick as he decided to open up his magical and mysterious garden and let an unsuspecting public see his life's work. After decades of gathering discarded materials and items, Rick's project is an uncompromising attempt to forge a truce between nature and man-made objects. In doing so he provokes us to question our constructs of order and beauty in a consumer age. I shot it myself and edited it with Andrew Mason. I had input from Andy Lee, Bridget Smith, Jason Massot, Joanna Pocock, Simon Chambers, Maha Taki, and Lasse Johannson. The film premiered at Birmingham's Flatpack Film Festival in 2019
